ATLANTA – Today, Democratic nominee for Governor, Stacey Abrams, released the following statement after the announcement that Music Midtown would be canceled due to Brian Kemp’s dangerous gun agenda:
“Brian Kemp’s dangerous and extreme gun agenda endangers the lives of Georgians, and the cancellation of Music Midtown is proof that his reckless policies endanger Georgia’s economy as well. It’s shameful, but not surprising, that the governor cares more about protecting dangerous people carrying guns in public than saving jobs and business in Georgia. Rather than respond to increased gun violence by strengthening safety, he doubled-down on weakened gun laws. In dire economic times for so many Georgians, this cancellation will cost Georgia’s economy a proven $50 million. This means that small businesses and workers who rely on events like Music Midtown and their tremendous economic impact have now lost incomes that help put food on the table and a roof over their heads.
Once again, as with his actions to ban reproductive care and to suppress voters, Kemp puts his political ambitions above the welfare of the state. While he and his political allies will try to distract Georgians by casting blame elsewhere, we can see the truth: the real Brian Kemp refuses to take responsibility and he is too extreme for Georgia.
Georgians deserve better — they deserve leadership that will not endanger our state’s economic standing and the lives of Georgians to score political points. Brian Kemp must speak out and tell us why he allowed this to happen. Georgia needs leaders that respond to the gun violence epidemic in our state with laws that ensure accountability and keep our communities safe, not laws that make it easier for convicted criminals to carry concealed weapons in public while putting our economy at risk.”
